Sonar

Commercial, research, and Navy/government are conducting high-decibel sonar in the ocean and Monterey Bay. This includes the Monterey Bay Aquarium/Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).

The California State Lands Commission issues administrative permits for these projects without environmental impact reviews. It refuses to address the damage to marine life — from plankton to whales — of the extremely high sound levels. MBARI research ship sonar is in the decibel range of 191-200 dB, and its new research vessel David Packard is even higher — at 235 dB.
OSHA maximum permitted dB for humans for ½ hour is only 110 dB.

MBARI’s dB levels could be lethal. Much lower dB levels can damage human organs such as the lungs, and injure or rupture internal membranes of the middle and inner ear. Jet take-off noise at 150 dB will rupture eardrums. LRAD weapons operate at 162 decibels.

Decibels are logarithmic. MBARI levels are much, much higher than OSHA’s limit. In fact, these are Saturn 5 rocket levels in the ocean.

If, based on the above information, these calculations are correct —

191 dB = 1000 times (10x10x10) more powerful than LRAD weapons,
and 1,000,000,000 times (10(9)) more powerful than OSHA limits

221 dB = 1,000,000 times (10(6)) more powerful than LRAD
and 10((12) times more powerful than OSHA limits

235 dB = over 15,000,000 times more powerful than LRAD
and 10(13) times more powerful than OSHA limits

A healthy ocean is a silent ocean. These high decibels and their resonance effects are shattering marine life.
