Soil and Water Contamination at CSUMB Fort Ord Site
On KSCO 1080 AM and 104.1 FM, livestream at: ksco.com
How contaminated are the soils and groundwater in the former Fort Ord military base area, which includes California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), large residential subdivisions and hiking/biking trails?
Listen in this Friday at 2pm-3pm Pacific Time on KSCO Radio “Community Matters” when Guest Pat Elder will discuss latest findings and reports. We will be joined by Mike Weaver, co-founder of the Fort Ord Community Advisory Group (FOCAG),
What do we know? What has the Army done to cover up vs. clean up the contamination?
FOCAG is the Fort Ord Community Advisory Group, a community group focused on the former base’s cleanup. It emerged after the Army disbanded the Fort Ord Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) in May 1999. Instead of accepting the narrative that the board was simply “ineffective,” community activists and watchdog groups saw the move as an attempt by the Army to silence public oversight.
In March 2003, a petition with 78 signatures—most from CSUMB—asked for a Community Advisory Group. The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) supported the idea and began to organize it ( cpeo.org )
