I will be discussing the [Santa Cruz County] Board of Supervisor action to reject, by a vote of 3/2, putting a measure on the 2028 local ballot that would allow voters to approve data centers in Santa Cruz County should there be an application for permitting in the future.
The item was proposed by Supervisor Justin Cummings. He is worried a data center could potentially be developed at the site of the former Cemex Plant in Davenport.

There has been a plan to build a data center, combined with a desalination plant, in Moss Landing (2010-2018), known as DeepWater Desal: DeepWater Desal aiming to build desalination plant in Moss Landing. It was to use sea water to cool the data center, and use the cooling water for desalination water supplies in the region.
